Why does Bataille speak of non-knowledge (Inner Experience, orig publ. 1954, Engl. publ. 1988), if it is really what cannot be spoken? Writing as a means to go to an edge and to peer at the abyss, writing as a means to share what is essentially solitude, writing as means to rip apart a construct of the rational, which cannot hold its own weight. Like the big sculpture of Ai Weiwei at Haus der Kunst, Munich (November 09); wooden walls melting under their own weight.
After writing this I search in the catalogue of the exhibition for the name of the work, only to discover that it was an actual upright sculpture entitled Template (Documenta 12, Kassel 2007), which collapsed. What I saw was a reconstruction of the collapsed work. Template - makes me think of Plato’s concept of eternal ideas; they also collapsed.
